Hockey is not just a popular sport at Inchmarlo; it is a discipline steeped in success and consistency.
It forms a core part of the Games Curriculum, played by all pupils from P3 to P7 throughout the year, with various age groups representing the school in numerous mini hockey tournaments.
The most significant measure of this success is the school’s astonishing record in the Northern Ireland Mini Hockey Championships, more commonly known as the Pearson Cup. Following their inaugural win in 1998, Inchmarlo established an unparalleled dynasty, consistently claiming the title on a remarkable number of occasions, most recently in 2025.
This success is a direct testament to the strong program and the quality of coaching provided, currently led by Mr. Christopher Morrow. The development of skills is facilitated by excellent facilities, including full use of the water-based pitch at Shaws Bridge and the convenience of the school’s own astro-turf pitch on the grounds.
The Inchmarlo hockey program serves as a genuine launchpad for elite talent, establishing a profound legacy that extends well beyond the preparatory years. Many former pupils who honed their skills on the school’s pitches have seamlessly transitioned to the RBAI First XI, with several going on to represent Ulster and Ireland at the underage level.
Notably, the program has produced senior international talent, including Michael Watt, Paddy Brown, and Paul Hollway. Michael Watt achieved the singular distinction of becoming the school’s first-ever Olympian, competing at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
This high-level pipeline is maintained through strong community ties, particularly with Instonians Hockey Club, where many boys attend weekly training sessions at the ‘Seahorses Academy,’ ensuring a continuous pathway for those who wish to pursue the sport at the highest level.
