Primary 3

Welcome to P3

P3 focuses on core Literacy and Numeracy development, enriched by integrated topic - based learning and Forest School.

RBAI Crest White Outline

Primary 3 runs from 8:55 am to 3:10 pm, offering a busy and exciting timetable both inside and outside the classroom.

The year begins by consolidating key concepts from P2, quickly moving to a dynamic curriculum centred on Literacy, Numeracy, and the World Around Us, all supported by ICT, Music, P.E., games, and Art.

In Numeracy, boys build strong mental maths skills and explore concepts like times tables (x2, x5, x10), place value, and formal addition/subtraction, using resources like Mathletics and Numicon.

Literacy lessons are focused on building confident readers and writers. Engaging topics are used to motivate the boys to write for a variety of purposes, from storytelling to factual reports. Reading is taught using a structured reading scheme, complemented by whole – class novels and fun weekly library visits.

Crucially, we always focus on the importance of good talking and listening skills to ensure every boy can express his ideas clearly.A popular highlight is the weekly Forest School session, which uses our beautiful school grounds to nurture self – esteem, cooperation, and resilience through outdoor, seasonal, and curriculum – linked activities.

A significant part of the P3 experience is topic – based learning, which integrates various subjects. The boys start by journeying through the history of Transport (culminating in a museum visit) and delve into the fascinating world of the Ancient Egyptians. Throughout the year, topics like “Northern Ireland’s Nature” allow for hands – on, activity – based learning often utilizing the Forest School setting.

The year concludes with exploring Castles, including a memorable trip to Carrickfergus Castle. The curriculum is further enriched with two weekly music lessons taught by a specialist teacher, Mrs. McMichael, and regular sessions for P.E. and games, ensuring a well – rounded and engaging educational experience.
